DON ARTAMAS

Contemporary Abstract Artist

"I have transcended the barriers of time and space in my life as an artist . . .
I am breathing forth an experienced challenge to this calling."

Artist Statement

Revealing The Unseen

When subject matter is no longer important, the artist can henceforth express what is essential to him. Completely free from conforming to external standards, he uses his senses and sensitivity and his preferred medium in a singular portrayal of self- identification.

Free - flowing energies from within demand expressive form - they in turn feed my senses. Thus my subjects do not consist of structured content. I relate to the suggestion of restlessness, subtle, yet ongoing motion without regard for time. I'm struck by elusive textures, atmospheric qualities, dynamic shapes, soft contours, subtle transitions or whatever elicits a response from the "eye" of my mind. All of these keep goading me to create the unexpected - regardless of technique. Clearly, the emergence of the unseen springsforth only from within.

Abstraction is a mystery . . . breaking away from the traditional, it at times resembles some of the bad dreams one has no desire to speak of or the nonsensical play of lights and forms. But to be a successful effort, it has to direct the aimless eye.

Improvisational Process

To validate artistically my departure from objective imagery, I have to interweave the pattern of shapes, edges and planes with the color "echoes" of lights and darks, accentuating underlying rhythms and vibrations. The improvisational process produces a subject that is inferred rather than a visually portrayed content. Unexpectedly, but decicedly, what I wanted to say in my paintings was said best by the simple honesty and forthrighness of acrylics. It is acrylic's "for-the-moment" quality that mirrors me. Acrylic too is unhesitant.

"Continually I became more sensitively aware of my own intense need to create and express... to fill a deep void amidst other daily strains."

For the most part I am self-taught in my quest for visual expression and communication, but this to me is no rattling negative. I rely heavily on unmuffled curiosity, evading aesthetic rules and formulae yet inventive of the unfamiliar. The answers are with me right now but I don't know the questions!

Many times I had to balance my interest and time between what is a "job" and what I felt was my "artistic passion." Continually I became more sensitively aware of my own intense need to create and express... to fill a deep void amidst other daily strains.

Free artistic expression fused with spiritual fulfillment . . .

Time came when for me, free artistic expression fused with spiritual fulfillment. It allowed me to come to grips with everything - for in no other way can I paint unless I'm spiritually and emotionally involved. Probably because of both, I have consciously erased the picturesque but enhanced my perception of my painting's "heartbeat." Thanks to my Unseen Mentor, when I paint . . . I cannot be afraid.

With scientific zeal, the artist must unrelentingly fathom the unknown, reveal the unseen, in the search for truth . . . All for His glory!

Biography

International Upbringing

Don Artamas is a Contemporary Abstract Artist, with an international upbringing, he is currently based in Marion, Indiana, USA and his works has been exhibited in various museums and galleries in Asia and USA. A student of the arts at an early age, Don Artamas has been painting professionally since 90's.

He does not limit himself by a particular style . . . he is a versatile artist who is inventive, searching and daring. His works are interesting and enlighthening characterized distinctively by spontaneity, impulse, depth, improvisation and chance. His abstract works are emotionally-charged infused with mystery and tension, expressing a wide range of human desire and yearnings.

The power and fascinating quality of Don Artamas' works stem from the feeling that they strike deep into subconscious reserves of energy and imagination.

Language of the Inner Self

"At an early age I always knew I would do something creative . . . I always had the uncanny feeling about making art and there was nothing I can do about it. When I discovered painting, I knew that this is the place where I feel most at home. Captured instantly, I learned the elements and principles of design, providing me a framework to use my creativity and imagination as a substructure of my unconscious thought guiding me through all my creative efforts.

For me abstract art is the language of the inner self and my artworks are simply letting those in-depth inspirations find their way out. It is an unending joy to create modern works of art - a way to explore and celebrate one's existence, creating worlds that simply can't be found in the here and now.

It's been some solace to experience that abstract art is magical . . . the magic varies, but it shall always be there.".

Humble Begnnings

"I have learned a lot of lessons in life. . . lessons that are essential to one's growth as an artist. But learning to integrate my faith with my art is one of the most important lessons I've learned! I am amazed, humbled and overwhelmed that God has given the incredible privilege of sharing my artistic journey with you far beyond I ever expected. It has truly been an amazing journey so far . . . and the best is still yet to be! I will always be thankful to the Lord of the journey, my "Unseen Mentor" who by His grace and love has carried me across a greater distance than I ever imagined."

Don Artamas passion for the arts has gone a long way, after Ayala Museum in the Philippines launched his first solo exhibit in the '90's. His works, infused with emotion, imagination and ruminations on his life as an artist . . . represent innovative and artistic currents shaping the modern contemporary art in the global sphere.

"Each painting of Don Artamas is a distillate after a searing process; a destination after a tortuous, feverish journey. it soothes the vexed spirit, with its sophisticated blend: - the deafening clamor of unbridled fervor - employing technique and style seemingly acquired thru the years from a school where the freedom lessons are taught in whispers and spoken only in the language of the soul; yet on the contrary, Don Artamas' work is focused and disciplined - and utterly graceful!."

"In these works, Don Artamas’ passion for abstraction is greatly emphasized. He believes that monotype prints has endless possibilities and cannot be imitated by any other medium. There are a lot of unpredictables involved and the spontaneity of the process demands a lot of energy. It’s a printing process where the artist doesn’t have to think about the technical aspects of printmaking. Improvisation, imagination, impulse, creativity and chance are all characteristics of this printing process which what makes monotypes so unique."

"One of the great discoveries of life is learning to draw inspiration from the passionate memory of an emotion, sensation or experience. These artworks truly resonates my emotions fermenting ideas that are completely individual but can be universally shared through the creative process."

For the most part, I have sustained my commitment to the contemplative nature of painting, impelled by a desire to communicate meanings and states of emotion, completely free from conforming to external standards – I had to translate the different elements of art - into metaphors of the spirit.

Instantly, a world unimaginable makes its presence as real as time, providing myself a new framework in which I can see and adequately grasp things with a transcendent perspective . . . permitting the eye to see what is possible and opening one’s senses to the undiscovered recesses of creativity. This process would then allow myself to arrive at a thorough and meaningful experience . . . a chance for deeper meaning and significance, a manifestation of spiritual dimension and transcendence.

These recent artworks are inspired by those moments of transcendence, paying attention to the intuitive core of my experience . . . nourishing the spirit and leading me to a gradual sense of discovery and enlightenment.

Don Artamas in New York

"Landscapes of the Mind"

Contemporary Abstract Artist Don Artamas takes a spiritual and transformative approach to painting, capturing a glimpse of the soul in his sweeping, minimalist works. Worked mainly in shades of grey with occasional touches of color, Artamas' art is filled with an emotional and atmospheric depth that is at once fierce and serene, like the quiet fury of an ocean as the storm passes on. These large scale paintings are done in acrylics on canvas, the rich colors complementing and enhancing the visual force of the forms. The artist's bold use of rough, broad brushstrokes, meandering drips and smooth expanses gives the works an intriguingly varied tactile quality that seems to reach out into the world beyond the surface of the pieces. Drawing stylistic inspiration from Mark Rothko's graphic color studies, Artamas maintains a subdued palette of limited hues and rich texture.

Don Artamas exhibits internationally as a professional artist. Having grown up with an international upbringing, he is currently based in Indiana, U.S.A.
